Summary of advantages and disadvantages for the host country

Advantages

- There is development and improvement of infrastructure and transport.
- There is economic growth and the generation of foreign exchange income.
- It places the host country in a positive context for increased foreign investment.
- It places the host country in a positive context for future international tourism.
- A large number of employment opportunities are created in preparation for the
event.
- Rural development could take place as a result of the event.
- A sporting event increases national pride and a sense of belonging.

Disadvantages
- Facilities used for the event may not be suitable for domestic use after the event
as they need to be maintained.
- During the event domestic tourism in the host country slows down.
- During the event the host country can be a target for terrorists.
- There might be pollution of areas in and around the places used during the
event.
- A high number of short term jobs are created.
- The event may create problems for the members of the general population who
are not interested in the event.
- Host countries spend huge amounts of money preparing for the event.
