               DOMESTIC, REGIONAL AND INTERNATIONAL TOURISM


               GLOBAL EVENTS OF INTERNATIONAL SIGNIFICANCE
               A global event is one that involves people from across the world. These include news
               reporters, television channels, participants, spectators and delegates. The events are
               very large and attract millions of viewers across the world.

               1.1 Sporting events
                   Sport is a multi-billion rand industry and strongly impacts on the global economy
                   and, in particular, on the country hosting the global event. The impact is caused by
                   mainly  the  spectators who  will come  and  spend money  on  matches,  transport,
                   accommodation, meals and visits to secondary attractions. There are also other
                   contributors who  come  such as  broadcasters,  advertisers,  sponsors,  marketers
                   and merchandisers.

                   Federation International Football Association (FIFA) World Cup
                   This is the world football (soccer) governing board with 211 member countries. The
                   World Cup event is held in different countries every four years. South Africa hosted
                   the event in 2010. In 2014 it was held in Brazil and in 2018 it was held in Russia.
                   They are 32 nations per event with an average of 50 delegates per team. Many
                   tourists visited South Africa in 2014 and expressed their interest to return after the
                   event.

                   Wimbledon
                   Wimbledon is a prestigious annual international tennis championship played on
                   grass courts in the London suburb of Wimbledon. It lasts for 13 days during June
                   and July and attracts players from across the world. Tennis lovers travel from the
                   corners of the world to see the matches. The tradition of Wimbledon includes an
                   all white dress code for participants and eating of strawberry and cream by the
                   spectators

                   The Comrades Marathon
                   The Comrades is the world’s largest ultra-marathon that takes place annually in
                   May  or  June  between  Pietermaritzburg  and  Durban  in  KwaZulu-Natal.  The
                   direction of the marathon alternates with the “down run” starting in Pietermaritzburg
                   and the “úp run” starting in Durban. It covers a distance of 89.9km. Every runner
                   who completes the marathon within 12 hours receives a medal. The first ten men
                   and women receive gold medals. The number of participants is over 20 000.

                   Tour de France
                   The Tour de France is held primarily in France and on very few occasions it has
                   started  in  another  countries.  The  cycling  takes  place  over  21  days  and  covers
                   3 600km. It has one day stages. The course changes every year but it always
                   finishes in Paris.
