DOMESTIC, REGIONAL AND INTERNATIONAL TOURISM
GLOBAL EVENTS OF INTERNATIONAL SIGNIFICANCE
A global event is one that involves people from across the world. These include news
reporters, television channels, participants, spectators and delegates. The events are
very large and attract millions of viewers across the world.
1.1 Sporting events
Sport is a multi-billion rand industry and strongly impacts on the global economy
and, in particular, on the country hosting the global event. The impact is caused by
mainly the spectators who will come and spend money on matches, transport,
accommodation, meals and visits to secondary attractions. There are also other
contributors who come such as broadcasters, advertisers, sponsors, marketers
and merchandisers.
Federation International Football Association (FIFA) World Cup
This is the world football (soccer) governing board with 211 member countries. The
World Cup event is held in different countries every four years. South Africa hosted
the event in 2010. In 2014 it was held in Brazil and in 2018 it was held in Russia.
They are 32 nations per event with an average of 50 delegates per team. Many
tourists visited South Africa in 2014 and expressed their interest to return after the
event.
