The event is broadcast in many countries on TV and attracts interest from all over
the world. Photographers and representatives from the media attend the event.
Accommodation and meals need to be provided for over 4 500 people for 23 days
with 21 days for racing and 2 rest days. Every town the event passes through will
benefit from the expenditure by spectators.
Olympic Games
The Olympic Games are so large that they have a significant impact on the
economy of the host city and country. There are Summer Olympics and Winter
Olympics and these are held every four years, which means there are Olympics
every two years. The visitors include spectators, participants, sponsors and the
media.
1.2 Other events
The G7 Summit
The Group Seven is a forum for the governments of the world’s largest economies:
France, United States of America, United Kingdom, German, Japan, Italy and
Canada. It was formerly known as the G8 which included Russia but Russia was
excluded from the group in 2014. Each year a different member state hosts the G7
Summit. The Plus Five countries, which include Brazil, People’s Republic of China,
India, Mexico and South Africa, have participated as guests. The G7 Summit brings
together ministers responsible for various portfolios to discuss issues of mutual or
global concern.
Summits on climate change
These summits try to find ways to cut down on global carbon emissions and
pollution. In 2000 the Southern African Economic Summit was held in Durban.
Thousands of delegates from many different countries attended the summit. In
2011 the UN Climate Change Summit was also held in Durban
Tourism Indaba
The word Indaba is a Zulu word meaning gathering of elders and these days it is
used generally for meetings. The Tourism Indaba is South Africa’s tourism
showcase. It is the largest incoming travel trade exhibition in Africa which is held
annually. It attracts participants from across the globe who aspire to learn about
tourism in Southern Africa. It attracts over 1000 participants

- They market the host country as a tourism destination.
- The first-hand experience by tourists tends to last longer and have a greater
impact.
- There is an increase in international tourism way before and after the event.
- They provide opportunities for international investments by business.
- There is a high income during the event due to increased tourists.
