Example 5

               1) What is 2,000 yards in meters?

               1 yd. = 0.9144 m (metres)
               2,000 x 0.9144 = 1,829 m

               2) What is 50 cubic foot in cubic meters?

                                     3
               1 cu foot = 0.0283 m
                                                3
               Multiply 50 x 0.0283 = 1.415 m

               3) Convert 500 millimeters to inches
               500 mm x 0.03937 = 19.7 inches

               Unit 1.1: Volume

Volume is used to measure the amount of liquids found in any object.

Measuring liquids and capacity using metric units

The capacity of an object refers to the amount of liquid a container can hold. To
find the capacity one must first know the volume of the container. The basic
unit measurement of measuring the amount a container can hold is litres.

One generally talks about the capacity a container can hold in the following
metric units: kilolitre (kℓ), litre (ℓ), and millilitre (mℓ).

The other metric units are hectolitre (hℓ), decilitre (Dℓ) and decilitre (dℓ).
Remember that you can convert from one unit measure to another in the metric
system by multiplying or dividing by powers of 10 (10,100,1000,10000).

               1 Cubic Metre = 1 000 Litres
